Ma'ao Elementary School
Bai Shan Tea Farm
Letters from Ma'ao School to Ms. Bai Shan

Letter 1
Aunt Bai Shan,
How are you!
I am a fifth grader in the poor mountain area. There is my father, mother and sister in my family. My sister stopped attending school after finishing elementary school. My parents are humble people who have been plowing this piece of land for their entire life. My sister is now working as a baby-sitter in the city in order to provide money for me to go to school. Each year, my teacher helps me, and the village makes efforts to help my family in any way they can, and still we can not get by. I often wish I could grow faster, and I could make money by working outside of the village to solve the problems in my family. However, time passes by so slowly that I sometimes really want to put down the books and leave the village. I reluctantly nodded my head when those nice uncles, aunts and teachers persuaded me to stay in school. Not long ago my teacher told me that Aunt Bai Shan donated money to the school¡¯s work-study project. If this is true, my tuition problem can be resolved. I was stunned when I heard this¡.
Aunt Bai Shan, I can¡¯t find a better way to repay you for what you did for us, and the only thing I can do is to study hard. My desire of being a good student and my efforts in getting good scores will be the evidence of my repayment to you. Please accept my sincere gratitude.

Wish you a healthy and happy New Year!

Letter 2
Teacher Bai Shan,
How are you!
I am the mother of Wang Jiali, a fifth grader at Ma Ao School. As a parent, who doesn¡¯t want her child to have a great future? However, we are so poor and our family consists of mostly elders and youngsters. Many times we were about to withdraw Jiali from school to make her work for the family, but our neighbors all were saying a good future depends on child¡¯s education, or we will remain poor forever. Just at this moment, you made a donation to Ma Ao School¡¯s work-study project, which helps the children to finish their schooling by doing a little project work in exchange for free tuition.
I want to let you know that I am going to support Jiali to continue her schooling, and encourage her to study well. In the future she can devote herself to change this poverty-stricken area for good with her knowledge and skills. I thank you for your support and thoughtfulness.

Wish you a healthy and happy life!

Letter 3
Aunt Bai Shan:
How are you!
We are student council members from Ma Ao Elementary School. We are good kids at home and good students in school. Each morning, we wait quietly for our teacher to come into our classroom, and listen attentively during the class as well as complete our homework. We never do bad things to school¡¯s property. Sometimes when our teacher was not happy, we sang a nice song for her/him. When our teacher looked worried, we handed her/him a cup of tea. When the teacher was absent from our class, we helped keeping class in order and distributed homework. As a result, our teachers often praise us as "little helpers and teachers".

A few days ago, the teacher brought us good news that aunt Bai Shan donated money to our school "work-study" project. We are so happy! With the money, we can start a project which can help us go to school at ease; and help our teachers to teach us in a comfortable environment. We can then happily read and write in our classroom. Aunt Bai Shan, we thank you! You have given us a beautiful picture of our future. On behalf all students in our school we solute you, and we wish you a healthy coming new year. Thank you!
