2007 Inner City Kids in China Program
----
An Interactions Focused Travel-study Summer Program
The 2007 Inner City Kids in China Program brought 7 Boston students and 3 teachers from Snowden International School to Beijing , Pingyao in
Shanxi Province and Xinglong in Hebei Province . This is the 3 rd China trip sponsored by the Phelex Foundation and Freeman Foundation for Snowden International School . It ran from June 21 through July 5.
During this period of intense immersion in the Chinese language and cultural environment, the participants experienced maximum exposure to various level of cultural understanding from visiting ordinary farmer families in the countryside to elite school academic settings in the city.
Community service and language immersion are the highlights of this year's program. In the countryside of Xinglong Vocational School , participants helped raise funds for the school's sustainable tuition program for local needy students. Unlike other years the participants this year were engaged in active practice of their Chinese language skill. They initiated conversations with newly acquainted friends and total strangers, and very much enjoyed the feeling of being understood or being able to express themselves in Chinese.

At the
Dandelion School in Daxing we played an outdoor game with
the local students. We also presented donated books to the
school library on behalf of Snowden sociology class. |
Again this year, our goal in the countryside is to help Xinglong Vocational School sell Bonsais on the street to raise funds for needy students.

In Xinglong, basketball was a very intense game. Everyone tried his hardest! It felt like we were playing on behalf of America.
|
Pinyao, an ancient city in Shanxi Province , is an attraction for learning Chinese history. There are many Chinese proverbs that originated here in this historical site. |
Interacting with Dandelion School students in class, we tried to speak Chinese with the help of occasional character writing to engage in meaningful communication.
