Remarks	The Sala nationality has a population of approximately 87000, one of the smallest minority groups in all China.

School and project photos:

Sala women wearing veil, attended the Community Council meeting for the first time. They participated in this decision-making process with men for the first time as well. The Community Council needed to decide on who is eligible to receive the Phelex-Kallio Tuition Aid.

Project developments:

Local government ceded 100 mu of land @ no cost. The Girls Aid Foundation of local education Department contributes RMB 15,000, and local education Department promises the school not to decrease the inputs after the project produces the proceeds. Local agriculture Department provides the technical support. Local public contribute RMB3,000.
In 2000, the Phelex/Rutanen Spice Garden has encountered a severe draught. Thus, local officials , public, teachers and students worked hard to carry water to irrigate the Garden. Consequently, over 50% saplings of Bunge prickly ash survived. Meanwhile, 50 mu size of land of peppers were harvested. The sales revenue reached RMB 84,000 and the proceeds amounted to about RMB 20,000.
In 2001, the School planted additional an additional 800 Bunge prickly ash tree saplings. And peppers were harvested again. 253 poor students received Tuition Aid from the proceeds of RMB 15,000.
In 2002, the program gained RMB 27, 000 proceeds, RMB 10, 000 net profit, and funded 222 needy pupils.
In 2003, more and more Chinese prickly trees died because of serious drought. Remedies were putting into practice.
